I tend to think of stone and concrete benches as belonging in a park or public space, rather than a backyard.

However, I realized the possibilities when I saw this attractive patio setting. I particularly like the curves of the benches, the chunky legs and the weathered look.

The advantages of concrete or stone are that they are low maintenance and long lasting. They can also be cast into most shapes and colored to your liking.

The disadvantages include being uncomfortable sometimes and feeling cold if they are in the shade. They are also heavy, making it difficult to move closer to the table if you need to.

Your choice of furniture will influence the overall style and feel of your garden or patio. Unlike lighter materials, stone and concrete have a sense of permanence. They can look as though they are an integral part of their surroundings, rather than an added extra.
